Compression Guide

Selecting the correct size for a compression garment is one of the most important factors to ensure optimal mobility and functionality. When fitted correctly, compression clothing should be snug but comfortable; never too tight to the point that the garment is restrictive. The information provided below is to provide general information with respect to sizing and measurements for sports-related compression wear. If you are looking for information on medical compression garments, you should consult with your physician. The information below should not be substituted for medical advice from your medical professional.

Regular Clothing Sizes Vs. Compression Wear

When considering compression clothing, never use your regular clothing size when ordering. Compression clothing is made to fit like a second skin with fabrics that differ from your regular clothing. Compression clothing is designed to offer a snug fit that contours the body so measuring yourself before you order is important. Because compression clothing varies in blends of nylon or polyester with spandex, lycra, or elastane, compression wear provides a contouring sleek appearance and stretchy feel.

When Your Measurements Fall Between 2 Sizes

Depending on your experience with wearing compression clothing, you can choose to size up or down. If you are inexperienced with compression wear it is recommended to order one size up as you may not be used to the pressure that compression clothing puts on various areas of the body. If you have worn compression clothing previously, then choosing one size down will probably be more beneficial.

    • Size Up: If it is your first-time wearing compression clothing. Choose a larger size so that you don’t feel restricted and squeezed.
    • Size Down: If you have previous experience with compression clothing. Choosing to size down can offer more benefits such as enhanced performance. This is based on personal preference and the goals you wish to achieve with the clothing.

How to Measure

Using a soft tape measure, ensure it lays flush against the skin and does not indent or dig in. Always start the tape measure at zero to ensure accurate measurements. If you are measuring for a post-surgical garment, always measure with the surgical site in mind.

Measuring Compression Tops

    • Chest (or bust): Measure around the fullest part of your chest or bust.
    • Waist: Measure around your natural waistline, which is right above your hips.
    • Hips: Measure around the fullest part of your hips.

Measuring Compression Bottoms

    • Waist: Measure around your natural waistline, which is right above your hips.
    • Hips: Measure around the fullest part of your hips.
    • Inside Leg Length: On your inner leg, measure from top to bottom.
    • Inseam: On your garment, measure from the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.

Measuring Compression Socks

The following steps apply for everyday compression socks as well as medical-grade compression socks, and the process is the same whether you’re after compression hose for women or men.

    • Step 1: Measure the circumference of the ankle at the narrowest part of the ankle, just above the ankle bone.
    • Step 2: Measure the circumference of the calf at the widest part of the calf.
    • Step 3: Measure the length of the calf. The measure is taken on the outside of the leg, by measuring from the floor up to the bend of the knee.
    • Step 4: Use the above compression sock size chart to determine your size.
    • Step 5: Ensure that the sock band lies flat and that the top of the band sits 2 finger widths below the crease of the knee. Never pull the sock up into the crease behind your knee as this may limit the circulation.

Pro Tips for Measuring

    • Measurements should always be taken as soon as possible waking when swelling is minimal. First thing in the morning is a good idea.
    • Measure next to the skin, not over bulky clothing.
    • Measure with the foot flat on the floor and with the leg bent at a right angle.
    • Use a cloth measuring tape. Take the measurements snug on the skin, but don’t pull tight.
    • Take length measurements from the ground up.
    • It’s helpful to take all the measurements. If you later choose to get a different style, you already have the measurements.
